Are you willing to be a little braver?

Updated: Apr 21, 2022

There's a lot of concern being raised about burnout. And rightly so. Along with creating an environment of wellbeing, removing or reducing the impact of factors that trigger burnout need attention.

One example is how companies hold business review meetings - the quarterly, monthly, even weekly ones. These create a mountain of recurring stress for employees which only seems to grow in some companies.

Hours are spent preparing presentations, reworking, rehearsing and eventually when its all done, prepare for the next one. If you are a leader or a client who cares about people who work for you, maybe you can consider the following:

  1. Your people cannot give you the reassurance of tomorrow that you can't give yourself.

  2. Do you really need this meeting? Are there absolutely no other ways to collaborate, share and track progress?

  3. If the answer to the previous question is a clear 'yes', can your meetings focus on what happened, what was learnt & what is the next commitment?. If you have to check all the details in every meeting, something else is broken (which in most cases, needs closer attention and, a more 'senior' conversation).

  4. Hold your people accountable to being present and learning, rather than having all the answers. You will get what you look for.

  5. Before thinking about replacing people, examine the structure they work in. Small changes to structure can have a huge impact on culture and team effectiveness.

A lot can change for your people without investing in wellness dollars. The only question is, are you willing to be a little braver?
